T

Ticking/duck

Ticking is a tightly woven, smooth hemp or cotton/linen mix cloth.  It can refer to a mattress or clothing fabric.  The French word “coutil” is similar to “keutil” which is the 18th century French word for quilt.

Transfer printing

Transfer printing is the digital printing of a design on a special paper, which is then applied to the textile by calendaring or a hot-press.  This enables the transfer of the colourants from the paper to the fabric.  The method has the advantage of not requiring additional finishing.  Transfer printing is particularly suitable for synthetic materials such as polyamide and polyester.
