Indienne

Indienne is a fine cotton cloth printed with coloured patterns. Originally imported by the Comptoir des Indes, its production methods were introduced by Armenian merchants in Marseilles from the 17th century – it was then referred to as Marseilles Indienne.  The fabrics characteristic red tones came from the common madder or garance plant used to make the dye.
